How Honest Hands Reimagined a Stainless Steel Dog Tag into a Custom Wedding Ring

At Honest Hands, we’re certified dog people. Just ask our shop dogs, Louie and Otis. We understand the connection between a person and their animal companion, which is why we were excited to take on a meaningful project for our customer, Logan. After reading about a custom ring we made using an arcade token, Logan reached out with a personal idea of his own. For his custom wedding band, he wanted to include his dog’s ID tag—a symbol of loyalty, memory, and daily life together.

The tag itself was made from stainless steel, about the size of a quarter, and only a millimeter thick. It was too thin to cut or bend without damage, and Logan couldn’t replace it. With the tag’s sentimental value in mind, we brainstormed to build a durable ring that honored Logan’s vision

Our initial plan was to create a replica tag, then bend and fit it into the inlay channel. That approach failed fast. The test piece warped at the edges and lost its integrity. So we went back to the bench and kept experimenting.

We tried laser welding. We played with engraving settings and materials. After plenty of trial runs, we realized the best solution would be to create a brand-new stainless steel sleeve and engrave a perfect replica of the tag’s artwork onto it.

To do this, we scanned and traced the tag design in Adobe Illustrator. We adjusted the layout, fine-tuned the orientation, and scaled it down to fit inside the ring. Once everything was dialed in, we used a rotary laser engraver to bring the design to life inside the stainless steel liner.

This approach did two things: it preserved the original tag, which we kept safe throughout the process, and it gave the ring a clean, wearable finish without compromising on meaning.

Logan’s custom ring was finished with a brushed titanium outer band and a polished interior, giving it a clean, balanced look. On the inside, the replica tag artwork lives on, engraved into the steel with care and accuracy. The result is a ring built to be worn daily, keeping his furry companion close even when he’s away.

We welcome these challenges, which involve crafting something durable from something delicate and capturing meaning in the materials without sacrificing strength.

Whether it’s your dog’s tag, beach sand from your favorite trip, or a keepsake passed down through generations, we’d be honored to help bring it to life with a custom ring.
