From the Band to the Boys

A determined groom finally got the ring he’d been asking for. Then he came back to make something for his whole wedding party.

Kenneth had a clear picture of his wedding ring. An 8mm platinum band, Black Emerald Opal filling the inlay channel edge to edge, deep black base, sharp flashes of green and blue, packed so tight the inlay would read as a single saturated field rather than individual stones. Not scattered. Not a few pieces floating in resin. Packed.

Some wedding decisions are temporary. The ring isn’t. Kenneth would wear his every day, and for something that permanent, getting it right wasn’t optional. He’d ordered a custom ring twice from another company. It came back wrong both times. A third attempt, same result. Opal spread thin across the channel, none of the density he’d asked for.

He reached out to Honest Hands with that history behind him and one more shot at getting it right.

Eight millimeters wide, flat profile, small beveled edges, single inlay channel running the full width of the face. The design wasn’t complicated. Kenneth just needed someone who understood the vision and could bring the wow factor out of a minimal design.

His order notes said it plainly: packed full, only small spacing if any, glow powder filling the gaps between pieces. When a customer knows what they want and puts it in writing, the work becomes about execution. That’s where Honest Hands is at home.

With Black Emerald Opal, density determines how the finished ring reads. Set the stones loose, and the dark base shows through, scattered color instead of solid color. Set them tight, and the stones press against each other, the flashes of green and blue build across the surface, and the inlay holds as one continuous field. We hand-sorted the opal for consistent sizing and pressed it tight across the channel. The Green Glow Powder settled into the remaining gaps before the resin coat sealed everything flush. Sanded down, polished out. The finished inlay runs wall to wall across the platinum surface, green and blue shifting with the light, the glow powder visible underneath when the angle is right.

Kenneth had his fiancée open the box first. He wanted to know it was right before he looked himself. It was. Deep green and blue, packed tight, shifting in the light. The real thing, finally.

The ring was exactly what he’d asked for. So Kenneth took the vision further.

Four sets of custom sterling silver cufflinks, one for him and one for each groomsman, built around the same materials as his band. Ben matched opal colors to the ties Kenneth sent as a reference. Fire Opal, Sky Blue Opal, and Lavender Opal, each with its own glow powder pairing. Kenneth’s own set matched his band: Black Emerald Opal and Green Glow Powder. Four people, four sets, one design logic running through them all.

Nothing compares to seeing an idea that started in your head, now on your finger. Cufflinks aren’t a typical order for us, but custom work doesn’t come with a fixed menu. Kenneth had a vision, and we followed it.
