Two Passions, One Custom Ring

How a Figure Skate Blade and an Elk Antler Became a Custom Wedding Ring

Marriage is about bringing two lives together, including the moments you share, the passions that define you, and the pieces of your past that shape your future. When Cody reached out to Honest Hands, he wasn’t just looking for a ring, he wanted something representing him and Alyssa.

For Cody, that meant elk antler from one of his first childhood hunts, a symbol of the outdoors and the traditions he holds close. For Alyssa, it was steel from her old figure skating blade, a nod to the countless hours she spent gliding across the ice. Together, these materials would form a custom wedding band as unique as their journey.

Custom rings come with challenges, but that’s what makes them worth creating. The skate blade was no ordinary piece of metal, and its hardened steel wasn’t easy to cut or shape. We knew it would take the right approach and a steady hand.

The design wrapped around a black titanium base, chosen for its strength and deep, natural finish. A section of the skate steel would be press-fitted onto the titanium, locking it into place without adhesives or welding. We added an off-center elk antler inlay to soften the industrial edge, giving the ring an organic contrast that felt balanced and intentional.

Each step required patience. The skate blade had to be heated and softened before machining, but even then, it pushed back against every cut. The titanium band needed to be measured and milled within a few thousandths of an inch—tight enough to hold the steel securely but not so tight that it cracked under pressure.

We oxidized the titanium once the ring took shape to achieve its deep black finish.

The final detail, a small pinhole in the skate’s steel, appeared just before the finishing process. Likely, a hidden flaw from the blade’s original welding revealed itself only after machining. Cody chose to keep it, knowing it was a natural part of the material’s story.
