How a mom designed her own custom black titanium engraved ring, by hand, to carry her children with her always.
Customized jewelry for parents is everywhere right now. Most of it comes down to picking a name, initials, or a birthstone off a set list, which works fine until you want something the list doesn't offer. Mia ran into exactly that. She had a sketch of what she wanted: a black titanium ring with a cross at the top of the band, her children's names, Yona and Makaio, in script beneath it, and autumn leaves trailing down a branch.
What she didn't have was any idea whether it could be built. "I honestly don't know if this is something you could even make," she wrote when she reached out to Honest Hands. The answer was an easy yes. The people we love building for want the ring they’ve imagined in their head made real, no compromises.
So how do you turn a freehand sketch into a usable ring design? The first step was getting Mia's drawing off the paper. We rebuilt it as clean vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator, then used CAD to scale and position every element around an 8mm band, shrinking it down to ring size while keeping each piece clear and recognizable. From there, it was a matter of composing the scene so it stayed balanced as it wrapped all the way around. She weighed in at each step, on the layout and the lettering, until it matched her vision.
Mia planned to hardly ever take her ring off, so she'd asked for something more durable than traditional yellow gold. Black titanium was the answer. The black is a penetrating oxide layer set into the metal by heat, not a coating that wears off, so it holds up on a ring that lives on a hand every day. The engraving plays to that dark surface. It cuts through to the lighter titanium underneath, so the design reads bright against the black.
Fire opal turned out to be a spot-on choice for the leaves. Its color runs warm on its own, orange and gold with flecks of green, close to how leaves look when they turn in the fall. Each one was set by hand along the branch, then sealed flush with the surface. When Mia saw the final mockup, she wrote back: "This makes me feel very happy and excited. I can't wait to see how it will look on the ring with colored leaves."
The finished ring holds everything from her sketch. The cross and the two names stand out silver against the black, and the fire opal leaves trail down the branch, their color shifting as the ring turns. The ring she had in her head came to life.
